Standard DOT 4 brake fluid absorbs moisture over time (hygroscopic behavior), lowering its wet boiling point down to dangerous levels (~155°C). Sustained heavy braking down 2,000-meter descents can rapidly elevate caliper temperatures beyond 220°C, causing fluid vaporization and complete loss of pedal pressure (brake fade).
- Flush Fluid: Ensure fresh high-performance DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 brake fluid with a dry boiling point exceeding 260°C is flushed within 12 months prior to expedition departure.
- Pads & Rotors: Ensure brake pads possess at least 6mm of friction material remaining. Inspect cross-drilled or slotted rotor cooling passages for carbon buildup.
